Prairie City is on four-lane Iowa Highway 163 and Interstate 80 is seven miles to the north. A new recreation complex is under construction and two new housing subdivisions are underway as well. Prairie City offers a variety of shopping, complimented by proximity to the growing eastern edge of the Des Moines metro area. Prairie City is also the gateway to the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge and Prairie Learning Center.
